Alsey is a Canberra based abstract sculptor. A self-described ‘late bloomer’, she is using her retirement years to create the depth of artistry in her life she always dreamed of.
Growing up with a slow combustion stove in the family home has left Alsey with a deeply rooted connection with the wood that fuelled it. Wood now fuels her imagination as she manipulates the fibres with its smells, colours, textures, flaws, knots, twists, and insect damage.
Alsey’s sculptures are informed by and infused with memories, feelings of movement, fundamental human emotions, and her interpretations of the world as she experiences it today.
She prefers to use mostly hand tools and a variety of finishes as she works with variables of density, texture, colour, light and the quirks and flaws of the raw materials to bring each individual piece to fruition.
